Two ways to bold text on YouTube
YouTube has its own bold formatting, but only in some places. Everywhere else, Unicode bold fills the gap.
YouTube's built-in formatting
In comments, YouTube turns text wrapped in asterisks into bold, text wrapped in underscores into italics, and text wrapped in hyphens into strikethrough (YouTube Help). Type *great tip* and it posts as bold. This is real formatting, so screen readers and search treat the words normally.
Video descriptions have their own formatting options. In YouTube Studio, you can bold, italicize or strike through text from the options at the bottom of the description box (YouTube Help).
Unicode bold characters
Titles, playlist names and channel names have no formatting options. There, the only way to get bold-looking text is to paste Unicode bold characters like ๐๐ผ๐น๐ฑ ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ป๐, which this generator creates. They're separate characters, so they look bold wherever they appear, with the trade-offs covered below.
Use YouTube's own formatting wherever it works, and the generator for the rest.
Where Unicode bold works on YouTube
- Video titles (up to 100 characters, per YouTube Help): bold displays, but use it sparingly. See the next section.
- Descriptions (up to 5,000 characters): Unicode bold works, but the bold option in YouTube Studio is the better choice for section headers.
- Comments and pinned comments: both the markup and Unicode work. The markup is the better choice here.
- Posts (shown on your channel's Posts tab, per YouTube Help): bold the first line of a poll or an update.
- Playlist titles: a bold label can mark a series.
- Channel name: people search for you by name, so keep it plain.
Mobile vs desktop rendering
Each device draws Unicode bold with its own fonts, so the same title can look a little different on a phone, a laptop and a TV app. Bold and Bold Sans look clean on recent devices. Rarer styles like Black Squares or Bold Gothic may show as boxes on older ones. Check new titles on your phone before you publish.
Should you bold your YouTube title?
Titles do two jobs: they help YouTube match your video to searches, and they get people to click. Unicode bold can hurt the first job. Search matches the plain words people type against your video's text (YouTube Help), and ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฝ๐ฒ is a different string of characters from "recipe".
If you want bold in a title:
- Bold one word that isn't a keyword, like a label: ๐ก๐๐ช, ๐ฃ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ ๐ฎ or ๐๐ฝ๐ถ๐๐ผ๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐ญ๐ฎ.
- Keep the topic, product names and search terms plain.
- Put plain keywords first. Long titles get cut off in many views.
- Don't bold the whole title. It looks spammy, and screen readers may read it as a string of character names.
Use cases for YouTube creators
Where bold text helps viewers most:
Description section headers
Bold labels like ๐๐ต๐ฎ๐ฝ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐, ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ธ๐ and ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ split a long description into parts viewers can find. Use the bold option in YouTube Studio where you can; Unicode bold works too. Keep the timestamps themselves plain. YouTube builds chapters from timestamps in the description: the first must start at 00:00, you need at least three in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long (YouTube Help). Bold digits like ๐ฌ๐ฌ:๐ฌ๐ฌ are different characters, so don't count on them being read as timestamps.
Pinned comments
Use YouTube's asterisk markup to bold the key line of a pinned comment, such as where to find the link or the next video. It's real formatting and needs no generator.
Posts tab updates
Bold the first line of a poll or announcement so it reads like a headline in the feed, then keep the details plain.
Playlists and series
A bold label in a playlist title, such as ๐ง๐๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ถ๐ฎ๐น๐, helps returning viewers spot the series on your channel page.
Best practices for bold text on YouTube
- Use YouTube's own formatting first: asterisk markup in comments and the bold option in descriptions. It's real formatting and has none of Unicode's downsides.
- Bold labels, not sentences. A word or two is enough.
- Keep keywords, links, timestamps and hashtags plain. They need plain characters to be found or to work.
- Pick one bold style for your channel so titles and descriptions look consistent.
- Preview on mobile before publishing.
Accessibility is the other reason to go easy. Screen readers may read Unicode bold letters by their long names or skip them entirely (Scope). A title or description should still make sense if the bold words come through badly.
Schedule YouTube uploads with ViralFarm
ViralFarm uploads and schedules YouTube videos and Shorts with your title, visibility and audience settings, alongside TikTok, Instagram Reels and your other channels. Paste the title with its bold label, set a time, and it publishes on schedule.
If you cut one video into a Short, a Reel and a TikTok, you can give each channel its own caption from a single post and see the week's uploads on one calendar. The free plan covers 2 connected channels and 20 published posts a month, with no credit card.
Frequently asked questions
How do I bold text on YouTube?
In comments, put an asterisk on each side of the words, like *this*, and YouTube shows them in bold. In video descriptions, use the bold option in YouTube Studio. For titles and other places with no formatting options, type your text in this generator, copy a bold style and paste it in.
Can I make a YouTube title bold?
Titles do not support markup, but Unicode bold characters display in titles. Use them for a short label rather than your keywords, because search matches plain words.
Why is my asterisk bold not working?
YouTube documents the asterisk markup for comments. It does not work in titles or channel names, and in descriptions you use the bold option in YouTube Studio instead. Also make sure the asterisks touch the words.
Does bold text in titles hurt YouTube search?
It can. Search matches the plain characters people type, and Unicode bold letters are different characters. Bold a label like NEW or Part 2 and leave the searchable words plain.
Can I use bold numbers in timestamps?
Avoid it. Chapters need plain timestamps in your description, starting at 00:00, with at least three in ascending order. Bold digits are different characters, so YouTube may not read them as timestamps.
Does Unicode bold work on mobile?
Yes, on current iPhones and Android phones. Each device draws the letters with its own fonts, so they can look slightly different. Rarer styles may show as boxes on older devices.
Is bold text bad for accessibility?
Unicode bold can be. Screen readers may read each letter by its long Unicode name or skip it entirely. YouTube's own formatting in comments and descriptions is real formatting and doesn't have this problem, so prefer it where it works.
Is the YouTube bold text generator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser with no sign-up, and you can copy as many styles as you like.
