How to Turn On Instagram Insights (Personal, Creator and Business Accounts)

How to Turn On Instagram Insights (Personal, Creator and Business Accounts)

October 10, 2026 · Annie Yang · 7 minute read

There's no "Insights" switch to flip. Instagram Insights turn on automatically for any public account, personal or professional. If your account is private, make it public (Menu > Account privacy > turn off Private account) or switch to a Creator or Business account, which makes it public. Then open your profile and tap Your dashboard (personal accounts) or Professional dashboard (Creator and Business accounts).

This is a change from how Instagram used to work, when insights were only for business and creator profiles. Today a public personal account gets the core numbers too: views, interactions, new followers and per-post stats. A professional account adds monetization insights, ad tools and features like a contact button.

Below are the steps for each account type, where to find insights for posts, Reels and Stories, how to turn insights off, and what to check when they won't appear.

Why Instagram Insights are worth turning on

Insights tell you what's working with real numbers instead of hunches. You can see:

  • Which posts reach people beyond your followers, through views and viewers split by followers and non-followers.
  • Which content makes people act, through likes, comments, saves and shares.
  • Who your audience is: top cities and countries, age ranges and gender, once you pass 100 followers.
  • When your followers are online, so you can post at better times.
  • Which posts bring in followers, so you can make more of them.

Do you need a professional account to see insights?

No. Any public account can view insights. A professional account is still worth it if you want more:

  • Creator accounts suit influencers, artists and public figures.
  • Business accounts suit brands, shops, local businesses and service providers.

Both types get the Professional dashboard, a contact button, ads and boosting with ad insights, and access to monetization tools such as Gifts and Subscriptions if you qualify. Keep in mind that professional accounts can't be private.

How to turn on insights on Instagram

Option 1: make your personal account public

  1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap the menu icon (three lines) in the top right.
  3. Under Who can see your content, tap Account privacy.
  4. Turn off Private account and confirm.

If you're under 18, your account is private by default, and teens under 16 need a parent's or guardian's permission to go public.

Option 2: switch to a Creator or Business account

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu icon to open Settings and activity.
  2. Under For professionals, tap Account type and tools.
  3. Tap Switch to professional account.
  4. Pick a category that describes what you do. It doesn't decide whether you get a Creator or Business account.
  5. Choose Creator or Business and tap Next.
  6. Add contact details and, if you like, connect a Facebook Page. Both steps are optional.

On instagram.com, the same option is under More > Settings > For professionals > Account type and tools. If you were private, switching makes your account public and approves pending follow requests.

Where to see your Instagram insights

Account insights

  1. Go to your profile.
  2. Tap Professional dashboard or Your dashboard. If you don't see it, open the menu and tap Insights under For professionals, or Your dashboard under Your insights and tools.
  3. You'll see the last 30 days of Views, Interactions, New followers and Content you shared.
  4. Tap any metric, then use the dropdown to choose Last 7, 14 or 30 days, Previous month, Last 90 days, or a custom range within the past 90 days.

You can also view account and content insight overviews on instagram.com.

Post and Reel insights

Open any post or Reel on your profile and tap View insights. Posts show views, interactions and profile activity. Reels add watch time, average watch time and follows. Insights for posts and Reels stay available for up to two years.

How to turn on Story insights

Story insights come with the same public-account setting. There's nothing extra to enable.

  • For a live Story: open your Story, tap Activity, then tap Insights.
  • For an expired Story: open your dashboard, tap Content you shared, and pick the Story.

Story insights include views, viewers, interactions (replies, shares, sticker taps and link taps), accounts engaged and profile activity. They stay available for up to two years, even though the Story itself disappears after 24 hours. If you use link stickers, see how to add a link to an Instagram Story.

How to turn off insights on Instagram

Since insights come with a public account, the only way to turn them off is to go private:

  • Personal account: Menu > Account privacy > turn on Private account.
  • Professional account: Professional accounts can't be private, so first switch back to personal (Menu > Account type and tools > Account type > Switch account type > Switch to personal account), then make it private.

If you switch back to public within 90 days, you can get your past insights data back. Switching to personal also removes access to Meta Business Suite and Ads Manager.

Post consistently so your insights mean something

Insights are only as useful as the data behind them. Three posts a month won't tell you much about the best time to post or which formats work. ViralFarm helps you keep a steady schedule: it plans and publishes Instagram posts, carousels, Reels and Stories from a queue and calendar in your browser, and can generate carousel slideshows from a link or topic when you're short on ideas.

Use your insights to spot your best days and formats, then fill the queue around them. The free Instagram line break generator makes long captions easier to read.

Troubleshooting: why can't I see my insights?

  • Your account is private. Make it public or switch to professional.
  • You just went public. Insights from before the switch may not be available.
  • No demographics? Audience breakdowns need over 100 accounts reached or engaged and a preset timeframe. Try Last 30 days or Last 90 days.
  • No follower insights? Follower trends need at least 100 followers.
  • Old Reels missing? Reel insights only cover Reels posted on or after May 14, 2021.
  • Numbers look delayed. Some metrics take time to populate, and some are labeled as estimated.
  • Some messaging metrics are missing in Europe or Japan. Instagram doesn't offer certain messaging-related metrics there.
  • Still nothing? Update the app and check again.
