How Long Do TikTok Stories Last? (24 Hours, Plus Archive and Highlights)

October 10, 2026 · Annie Yang · 7 minute read

TikTok Stories last 24 hours. The clock starts the moment you post, and when it runs out the Story disappears from your profile, your followers' inboxes, and the For You and Following feeds. Each Story you add runs on its own 24-hour timer.

Expired doesn't always mean gone for good, though. TikTok has been rolling out a private Stories archive and, since spring 2026, Story Highlights that let some accounts pin old Stories to their profile. Both are still reaching accounts gradually, so whether you see them depends on your app version and region.

Here's how the 24-hour window works, how to post and manage a Story, what happens after it expires, and how to save the ones worth keeping.

How the 24-hour window works

The timer is tied to each Story, not to the calendar day. Post one at 9 a.m. and another at 6 p.m., and the first disappears at 9 a.m. the next day while the second stays until 6 p.m.

While a Story is live, a ring shows around your profile photo. People can tap it from your profile, from their inbox, or when TikTok surfaces your Story in their Following or For You feed. That last part matters: TikTok Stories aren't only seen by followers, so a good Story can reach people who've never visited your profile.

There's no setting to extend a Story past 24 hours. If you want something to stay up, post it as a regular video or add it to a Highlight.

How to post a TikTok Story

From the camera

  1. Tap the + (Add post) button at the bottom of the app.
  2. Tap Story below the record button.
  3. Choose Photo, Text or a video time limit. Take a photo, record, type your text, or tap Upload to pick something from your device.
  4. Add a filter, sound, text or stickers. For video, you can use TikTok's advanced editing tools.
  5. Tap Your Story to post.

From your profile photo

  1. Tap your profile photo at the top of your Following feed, your inbox, or your profile.
  2. Upload a photo or video, or tap the camera button to create one.
  3. Edit it and check the Story settings.
  4. Tap Your Story.

Duets and Stitches can go to your Story too: when you finish recording one, tap Your Story instead of Next.

Where your Story goes after 24 hours

The Stories archive

On accounts that have it, expired Stories move to a private archive that only you can see. You can look back through old Stories there and pick ones to reuse. TikTok has been adding the archive in stages, so if you can't find it in your profile or settings, your account may not have it yet. Until it does, treat an expired Story as gone.

Story Highlights

TikTok started rolling out Story Highlights in spring 2026. Highlights sit on your profile below your bio and let you group old Stories under a name and cover, much like Instagram Highlights. If your account has the feature, you'll see a Highlights prompt on your profile:

  1. Go to your profile and tap the Highlights prompt.
  2. Select the archived Stories you want to include.
  3. Name the Highlight and tap Create.

Not every account has Highlights yet. If yours doesn't, keep reading for other ways to hold on to a Story.

How people see and interact with your Stories

Viewers

Open your Story from your profile photo. The total view count shows at the bottom, and swiping up shows the accounts that watched it. Check this while the Story is live; it's the easiest time to see the full list.

It works the other way too. When you watch someone's Story, they can see you viewed it, even if your account is private or you've turned off profile view history.

Reactions and replies

Viewers can send emoji reactions or reply with a message. Replies from friends (followers you follow back) land in your inbox. Replies from anyone else arrive as message requests. Viewers can send unlimited replies, and you control who can reply through your direct message settings.

Changing who can see a Story

Open the Story, tap the Share button at the bottom, then tap Settings and choose who can view it.

How to save and repurpose a TikTok Story

  • Save it before it expires. Open your Story, tap the Share button and look for the save option to download it to your phone.
  • Add it to a Highlight. If your account has Highlights, this keeps it on your profile.
  • Repost it as a regular video. Upload the saved file as a normal TikTok post with a new caption. A Story that got lots of replies is a good sign the idea deserves a permanent post.
  • Keep the original files. If you film in your phone's camera app first, you always have a copy, whatever TikTok does with expired Stories.

Make the 24 hours count

Because Stories expire, they're the right place for things that don't need to live on your profile:

  • Behind the scenes. Show the setup, the mistakes, the packaging table. It makes your main posts feel more human.
  • Teasers. Post a short clip from tomorrow's video so people know to come back.
  • Quick questions. Ask followers to reply with their pick or their question, then answer the best replies in a full video.
  • Time-limited news. Restocks, sales, live session reminders. When the Story expires, so does the message.

Post when your followers are active. The follower section of TikTok's analytics shows the hours they're most often on the app, and a Story posted then gets the most out of its 24 hours.

Plan your main TikTok posts with ViralFarm

Stories work best when they support a steady feed of regular posts. ViralFarm handles that side: it generates TikTok photo slideshows from a topic, a link or pasted text on templates modeled after posts that went viral, and schedules them along with your videos. You can also use TikTok's "send to drafts" mode to land posts in your TikTok drafts, then add a trending sound in the app before publishing.

ViralFarm doesn't post TikTok Stories, since you create those in the TikTok app. If you need slideshow images at the right size, the free TikTok photo resizer crops them for you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see who viewed my TikTok Story after 24 hours?

Check while the Story is live: open it and swipe up to see the viewer list. After it expires, the Story leaves public view, so don't count on being able to pull up the list later.

Can I extend the 24-hour duration of a TikTok Story?

No. Every Story expires 24 hours after you post it. To keep it visible, add it to a Highlight if your account has the feature, or repost it as a regular video.

How do I delete a TikTok Story?

Tap your profile photo at the top of your Following feed, inbox or profile. Swipe up on the Story, tap Delete and confirm. You can also tap the Share button on the Story and choose Delete.

Do TikTok Stories show up on the For You page?

Yes. Besides your profile and your followers' inboxes, TikTok can show Stories in the For You and Following feeds.

Can you schedule a TikTok Story?

TikTok doesn't offer Story scheduling. You can schedule regular posts in TikTok's own tools or with a scheduler like ViralFarm, but Stories are posted live from the app.

Why can't I find Story Highlights on TikTok?

Highlights are still rolling out. Update the app and check your profile for a Highlights prompt. If it isn't there, your account doesn't have the feature yet.
