The best time to post on Instagram in 2026 is a weekday, usually Tuesday through Thursday, somewhere between late morning and early evening in your audience's local time. Wednesday is the most consistent day across the major studies. Saturday and Sunday are the weakest.
That is an average across millions of accounts, not a rule for yours. Sprout Social's 2026 data puts Wednesday's peak at 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Buffer's single best slot is Thursday at 9 a.m. Later found that posts published at 5 a.m. earned the highest engagement rate. Same app, three different answers, because each study looks at different accounts and measures success differently.
So treat the research as a starting point and let your own numbers decide. Instagram already tells you when your followers are online: open Insights, find Most active times, and test the two or three windows where the studies and your audience overlap. This guide shows the data, explains why it disagrees, and walks you through finding your own best time.
Best times to post on Instagram: what the 2026 studies say
Four of the biggest social media tools publish yearly timing research based on posts sent through their platforms. Here is what each one found. All times are in the audience's local time zone.
| Study | What they analyzed | Best times | Best day(s) | Weakest days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sprout Social (updated March 2026) | Nearly 2 billion engagements across about 307,000 profiles, Nov 2025 to Feb 2026 | Mon 2–4 p.m., Tue 1–7 p.m., Wed 12–9 p.m., Thu 12–2 p.m. | Monday to Thursday | Saturday and Sunday |
| Buffer (published September 2026) | 9.6 million Instagram posts from 200,000+ accounts, Jan 2024 to Dec 2025 | Thu 9 a.m., Wed 12 p.m., Wed 6 p.m. | Wednesday, then Thursday and Tuesday | Friday and Saturday |
| Hootsuite (published July 2026) | Over 1 million posts, analyzed with Critical Truth and localized to 118 countries | Mon 3–9 p.m., Tue 5–8 a.m. and 3–7 p.m., Thu 4–5 p.m. | Monday, Tuesday and Thursday | Not stated |
| Later (updated April 2026) | 6 million+ feed posts, Jan to Oct 2024 | 5 a.m. | Monday | Not stated |
The common thread: midweek afternoons are safe, and weekends tend to underperform. Later's early-morning result is the outlier, and its data is also the oldest of the four.
Best time to post on Instagram by day of the week
Three of the studies break their results down by day. Buffer lists its top hour first, followed by runners-up.
| Day | Sprout Social | Buffer | Hootsuite |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday | 2–4 p.m. | 7 p.m. (then 6 or 8 p.m.) | 3–9 p.m. |
| Tuesday | 1–7 p.m. | 7 p.m. (then 3 or 5 p.m.) | 5–8 a.m. and 3–7 p.m. |
| Wednesday | 12–9 p.m., plus 11 p.m. | 12 p.m. (then 6 p.m. or 8 a.m.) | 5 p.m. |
| Thursday | 12–2 p.m. | 9 a.m. (then 8 or 7 a.m.) | 4–5 p.m. |
| Friday | No clear peak | 10 p.m. (then 9 p.m.) | Around 4 p.m. |
| Saturday | Lowest engagement of the week | 9 p.m. (then 10 or 8 p.m.) | 11 a.m. and around 5 p.m. |
| Sunday | One of the weakest days | 9 p.m. (then 10 or 8 p.m.) | 12–3 p.m. |
Where all three agree, you have a strong first test. Tuesday between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. fits every column, and so does Wednesday around 5 to 6 p.m. Weekend evenings are where Buffer differs most from Sprout Social, so treat those as experiments rather than defaults.
Why the studies disagree
It is tempting to pick the study you like and stop there. It helps more to know why the numbers differ, because that tells you which one is closest to your situation.
- Different accounts. Each study only sees its own customers. A tool popular with solo creators will produce different patterns than one used mostly by large brands.
- Different metrics. Buffer ranks times by median engagement rate (likes, comments, shares and saves divided by followers). Sprout Social looks at total engagements. A slot can win on one measure and lose on the other.
- Different years. Later's data covers January to October 2024. Sprout Social's covers November 2025 to February 2026. Habits shift, and so does Instagram's feed.
- Ranges versus single hours. Sprout Social reports windows, while Buffer reports the single best hour per day. A 12–9 p.m. window and a 12 p.m. peak can describe the same pattern.
The useful part is the overlap, not any single number.
8 ways to find your best time to post on Instagram
1. Start with the midweek overlap
If you have no data yet, post on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday between noon and 6 p.m. local time. Sprout Social, Buffer and Hootsuite all count at least one of those days among their best, and afternoon hours appear in most of their windows.
2. Post for your audience's time zone, not yours
All four studies report local time. If most of your followers are in New York and you live in Los Angeles, a noon Eastern post means scheduling for 9 a.m. Pacific. Check Top locations in your follower insights to see where your audience actually lives.
3. Check Most active times before you commit
Instagram shows the hours and days your own followers are on the app. It is the closest thing to a personal answer you will get, and it takes two minutes to find. Full steps are in the next section.
4. Use your industry as a tiebreaker
Hootsuite's 2026 study breaks results down by industry. A few examples:
- Consumer goods and retail: 7–11 a.m. on Mondays and 5–7 p.m. on Tuesdays.
- Financial services: 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays.
- Healthcare: 1–3 p.m. on Mondays, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thursdays and 8–11 a.m. on Saturdays.
- Government: 12–3 p.m. on Thursdays.
5. Time Reels, carousels and Stories separately
Buffer found Reels perform best in the evening, between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m., while carousels follow the general midweek pattern. For Stories, Buffer suggests posting daily, ideally once or twice a day. Later's Reels data points to midnight, with Monday as the best day. The studies conflict again, so test evenings first because more sources support them.
6. Change one thing at a time
When you test a new slot, keep the format and topic similar so the time is the only real difference. Give each slot at least two weeks. Compare reach, saves and shares per post, not just likes, since likes alone can hide whether new people saw the post.
7. Don't write off weekends if your business lives there
Weekends are the weakest days on average. But a brunch spot, an events venue or a weekend market sells on Saturday and Sunday. Hootsuite still lists Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m. as the best weekend windows, so start there if weekend posts matter to you.
8. Schedule so you hit the window every week
Knowing the right time only helps if you post at it. Batch your posts once a week and schedule them, so a Wednesday noon post goes out on Wednesday at noon even when you are busy.
How to find your best posting time in Instagram Insights
- Make sure you have a professional account (Creator or Business). Insights are not available on personal accounts.
- Open your profile and tap Professional dashboard.
- Under account insights, tap See all, then open Total followers (some app versions label it Followers).
- Scroll down to Most active times. Switch between the Hours and Days views.
- Write down the two or three busiest hours on your busiest days. Those become your test slots.
Instagram only shows follower activity once your account has at least 100 followers. Below that, use the study windows above and track results post by post. Menu names move around between app updates, so if something looks different, look for the followers section of your insights.

Schedule Instagram posts for your best times with ViralFarm
Once you know your windows, the hard part is showing up in them every week. ViralFarm lets you queue Instagram feed posts, carousels, Reels, Stories and trial reels, then publishes them at the time you set. The calendar view shows which slots are filled and which are empty, and the same post can go to TikTok, Threads or Pinterest with its own caption.
If filling those slots is the real bottleneck, ViralFarm's AI turns a link, a topic or pasted text into Instagram carousels built on templates modeled after posts that went viral. You can edit slides, brand colors and fonts before you schedule. You can also try the free carousel generator, or connect ViralFarm to Claude or ChatGPT through MCP and ask your agent to schedule a post for Wednesday at noon. The free plan covers 2 channels and 20 published posts a month.
A 4-week plan to find your own best time
| Week | Slots to test | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Tue 1 p.m., Wed 12 p.m., Thu 9 a.m. | Reach, saves and shares per post after 3 days |
| Week 2 | Mon 7 p.m., Tue 7 p.m., Wed 6 p.m. | Same metrics, same format as week 1 |
| Week 3 | The two best slots so far, plus the peak hour from Most active times | Which slot wins twice in a row |
| Week 4 | Your winner, plus one wildcard (for example 5 a.m.) | Whether the wildcard beats your winner |
Keep the winning slots as your default schedule and repeat the test every few months. Audiences change as accounts grow.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to post on Instagram?
Midweek afternoons are the safest choice. Sprout Social's 2026 data shows Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. as the strongest window, and Buffer's top slot is Thursday at 9 a.m. For your account, check Most active times in Instagram Insights and test the hours that overlap with these windows.
What is the best day to post on Instagram?
Wednesday is the most consistent pick. Buffer ranks it first, and Sprout Social shows its widest peak window on Wednesday. Hootsuite favors Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and Later names Monday, so any weekday from Monday to Thursday is a reasonable default.
What is the worst time to post on Instagram?
Weekends perform worst on average. Sprout Social found Saturday has the lowest engagement of the week, and Buffer names Friday and Saturday as the weakest days. That does not mean weekend posts fail, only that they start with a smaller audience.
What time should I post Reels?
Start with the evening. Buffer found Reels do best between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. Later's data points to midnight on Mondays. Test an early evening slot first, then try a late slot if your audience skews toward night owls.
Does posting time still matter on Instagram?
It matters, but less than the post itself. Timing affects how many followers see a post soon after it goes live. A strong post at an average time will usually beat a weak post at the perfect hour, so fix the content first and use timing to give good posts a better start.
Should I use my time zone or my followers' time zone?
Your followers'. Every study above reports times in the audience's local time. Check your top follower locations in Insights and schedule for the time zone where most of them live.
Pick three midweek slots, check them against your Most active times, and test for a month. When you are ready to put the schedule on autopilot, ViralFarm can queue your Instagram posts alongside TikTok, Pinterest, LinkedIn and the rest of your channels.
